Original house built for the Earl of Rothes between 1667 and 1672. John Mylne is thought to be the architect with his nephew Robert completing it after his death in 1667. After a great fire in 1763 parts of the original house were demolished but the west wing was rebuilt c1765-7. Other alterations took place in the mid 19th century as well as the 20th century. There was another major fire in 2009 when the house was in the process of renovations and conversion to flats. A number of masons' marks were recorded on the facade of the house, the remaining part of the 17th century structure, by Tom Addyman of Addyman Archaeology while undertaking a Standing Building survey. 27 marks belonging to at least 13 different masons were photographed on the principal frontage and upon the polished sandstone of the dressings of some features visible internally, such as the loggia arcade. | | |
