A building most likely stood here from at least the 14th-century. A licence was granted in 1444 by James II to fortify and add an iron yett and again, in 1573 a second licence was granted by James VI to fortify and add an iron yett. It is probably from this latter date the the present building belongs to. Restored in 20th century but the tower was in a particularly good state of preservation prior to restoration and had been sympathetically restored, with many marks visible all over the castle, in particular the vaulted roof of the lower floor has a considerable number of marks visible. 710 marks recorded with 64 different masons.
