The Old Townhouse is now a museum. It was built in 1789-90 to replace a tollbooth which was first mentioned in 1450 on this site. The ground floor originally contained a courtroom, a debtor's prison and two cells. Upstairs was a hall known as the Guild Hall, which was used as the Council Chambers. Two marks were recorded in the cells. Recording undertaken by Murray Archaeology Services during a Watching Brief.
